Tomarovka Chalk Cliffs

Tomarovka in Yakovlevsky District lies on the chalk belt of the Central Russian Upland. White cliffs and outcrops appear around the town — typical Belgorod landscape where chalk lies near the surface. In the 19th century the Belgorod–Gotnya–Sumy railway passed through Tomarovka; construction began in 1885 and finished in 1903. The town grew as a transport and trade hub of the steppe. Chalk cliffs are not a reserve with eco-trails but field exposures along ravines and roads. Geologists value clean Upper Cretaceous sections; travellers value white chalk against green steppe. Combine Tomarovka with historic Yakovlevo (~25 km) and Nikolo-Tyablovsky Monastery (~30 km) for a west oblast route. Chalk crumbles — stay back from ledge edges and do not damage outcrops.
