Tunka Valley and Arshan

The Tunka Valley runs along the Irkut River between the Sayan Range and Khamar-Daban spurs. Arshan village sits at the mountains' foot where thermal and mineral waters emerge. Arshan springs have been known since the 19th century — varying temperature and chemistry; sanatoriums and baths operate year-round. Green summers, snow and −30 °C winters. Trails from Arshan lead to Kyngarga waterfalls and slope viewpoints. Easy climbs but slippery rocks after rain — a mountain spa, not a beach resort. Linked to Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude by road; several hours' drive. Many stay one or two days between Baikal and central Buryatia. A good base for day hikes and a contrast to southern steppe — wetter and cooler here.
