Ugra National Park

Ugra National Park was created in 1997 over more than 986 sq km in Medyn, Dzerzhinsky and Fatezh districts. It is a biosphere reserve protecting forests, floodplain and the Ugra valley. The name recalls the 1480 Stand on the Ugra — a diplomatic stand-off between Muscovy and Lithuania at the river crossing. Today it is a landscape and cultural route, not a battle re-enactment site. Monasteries, old villages, viewpoints and eco-trails lie within the park. It shares the Golden Ring of Ugra tourist cluster with Nikola-Lenivets, Kozelsk and historic towns. Access is partly regulated: routes of varying length, seasonal zone closures and forest behaviour rules apply. Field walks for hours or days with guesthouse stays — not an urban park. Mixed forest with pine and larch; edges, bogs and meadows contrast strongly in spring and autumn. Ticks and mosquitoes — repellent and checks after walking. Some roads are not cleared in winter — check passability. In summer Nikola-Lenivets festival days overload parking and approaches.
