Umets Chalk Outcrop

Umets village in Tambovsky District is known for chalk outcrops — white Upper Cretaceous slopes breaking through Chernozem on ravine and gully banks. Chalk lies near the surface; outcrops form terraces and scree. For geologists and nature lovers this is an open-air classroom: layers, cracks and white dust are visible to the naked eye. Sections show flint concretions — reminders of an ancient seabed. The outcrop is not a museum: no fences or eco-trails. Do not damage slopes for samples or approach unstable ledge edges — chalk crumbles and dusts. Combine Umets with Tambov (~25 km) and Platonovka steppe (~40 km) — white chalk, dark Chernozem and golden steppe. Best in dry spring and autumn weather: slopes are slippery after rain and dirt access turns to clay.
