Ust-Elegest Uyghur Fortress
The Ust-Elegest fortress is one of two known Uyghur-period stone lookouts in Tuva (alongside “Boom” near Kyzyl). Fortification studies place it on a hilltop above the Elegest mouth, a left Yenisei tributary, near the namesake village. Masonry is dry stone without mortar; purpose was valley and waterway control. Ust-Elegest village sits where the Elegest meets the Yenisei, 29 km from Kyzyl; federal route R257 crosses nearby. The site is not a fully signposted open-air museum: the climb needs sturdy shoes and care on scree. Catalogue coordinates anchor to the village — confirm final paths locally. Do not remove stones or add cement “repairs” — the site is archaeological. Pair with a walk at the Yenisei mouth but do not confuse with the better-known Por-Bazhyn on Tere-Khol.
