Uvarovo Salt Lakes

Uvarovo in south-east Tambov Oblast is known for salt lakes nearby. Lakes formed in basins with highly mineralised water; shores are white with salt crust. The lakes matter for birders: migrants stop here, grebes, waders and ducks nest. Many mosquitoes in summer; winter ice and snow turn the scene into steppe minimalism. Swimming is not recommended without medical advice — water is bitter and irritates skin. A route for observation and photos, not beach recreation. Combine Uvarovo with Zherdevka (~55 km) and Mordovo (~55 km) for southern sugar, park and salt lakes in one day. Do not walk on thin winter ice unchecked — salt lakes freeze unevenly. Rare halophyte vegetation — saltwort, reeds and salt-tolerant herbs — adds a botanical angle for those studying southern steppe wetlands.
