Vaskino Estate

In Vaskino, Chekhov district, an Empire-style main house survives with a formal park and ponds. The village is known from the seventeenth century: M. T. Likhachyov held the estate and around 1700 founded the stone Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Later owners included the Golovins and Izmaylovs; in the late eighteenth–nineteenth centuries the Shcherbatovs (the main house is usually dated to the 1820s). The Chekhov link here is mainly with Prince S. I. Shakhovskoy — a Melikhovo neighbour and zemstvo figure: the writer visited Vaskino, joined local affairs and, according to Chekhov-circle local histories, stood godfather to Shakhovskoy’s daughter in the village church. Decembrist and philosophical circles around the Shcherbatovs/Shakhovskoys appear as family background, not as an on-site museum display. After Shakhovskoy’s ruin the estate passed to other early-twentieth-century owners (including engineer V. N. Semenkovich, a nephew of Afanasy Fet, and E. A. Kapkanchikova with a boarding house). Chronology matters: Chekhov died in 1904, so “Semenkovich the owner as Chekhov’s friend” does not fit — the writer’s visits belong to the Shakhovskoy period. After the Revolution the buildings served various uses; today the estate and church are a quiet Chekhov-district stop. Confirm access to the house and park — parts may be private or restricted.
