Velikiye Luki Fortress
Velikiye Luki stands on the Lovat River in the oblast's south-east. A major rail junction on the Moscow–Riga line; routes to Pskov, Novgorod and Belarus cross here. Historic core — Luki Fortress: earth ramparts, ditches, restored fortification fragments. Museum, monuments and alleys on fortress ground. The city was heavily damaged in the war; the centre is mostly post-war build, but ramparts and museum keep memory of earlier eras and the 1941–1943 defence. Not an oblast tourist hub but a working city with a station, markets and everyday life. Feel the scale of southern Pskov land: river, bridges, squares. Fortress visit 1–2 hours; a base for nearby districts or a long rail journey stopover. Snowy windy winters; green Lovat embankments in summer. For war history and railway geography, not only ancient Pskov.
