Vodlozero National Park
Vodlozero National Park protects a large lake and surrounding taiga in the oblast's northwest. Sparsely settled shores — a few villages, fishing camps and old timber traces; landscape closer to Karelia's interior than the Northern Dvina delta. Trips start from Kuganavolok or Shalakusha — then boat, motor with a local guide or shore trails. Pike, zander and other species; confirm fishing rules and permits with park administration. Wooden chapels and traces of old settlements remain. Parts of the shore are protected — fires, camps and overnights only at allowed sites. Combine with a Karelia route or contrast with cultural Kenozero — fewer church-museums, more water and forest. Weak shore signal; carry fuel and food. Plan two to three days with tent or base stay. Dense mosquitoes and ticks in summer; short autumn days but good fishing and quiet.
How to get there
From Arkhangelsk or Konosha to Kuganavolok or Shalakusha; then boat or on foot along shore.
