Volotovo Hillfort

Volotovo village in Chernyansky District was founded in 1663. Legend holds the name comes from Voivode Volot, killed in a 17th-century Turkish campaign; warriors buried him under a hill piled with helmets and caps. The hill on the village's north-east edge has long been called Volot's Grave. The annual "Volosh Wedding" festival with military re-enactment is held here; flowers are laid at the mound foot. Archaeologists have not dug extensively — the site is more a folklore monument than a classic hillfort. For local identity the mound matters as much as stone fortresses. Volotovo is on the Korocha–Chernyanka–Krasnoye road, 27 km east of Chernyanka. Nearby are other Chernyansky historic points including Kholkov Monastery (~40 km). The route needs some imagination: no original ramparts, but views over steppe fields and shelterbelts. Volotovo hillfort — field archaeology, no amenities. Dry weather best; slippery after rain.
