Vorotynsk Hillfort

Vorotynsk stands on the right Oka bank 40 km from Kaluga; known since the 14th century as an appanage centre with earthen hillfort ramparts. The hillfort on the river hill is a field route with signs and wide floodplain views — not a glass-case museum. Linked to local princes and medieval Rus. Bank views are among the best near Kaluga: floodplain, forest distance and Oka bends. Combine with Polotnyany Zavod and Konchanskoye (~25–40 km). No ticket required but practical shoes and respect for the archaeological site — do not dig or break trees on the rampart. Summer slopes are hot — water and a hat essential. Winter access may be difficult — check road passability. Fishing and riverside recreation follow local rules; leave no litter on slopes.
