Waldau Castle

In Nizovye village, Waldau Castle survives — one of the most readable Teutonic sites in Kaliningrad Oblast. Compared to the overgrown ruins of many castles in the oblast, more stone masonry volume remains and the fort's silhouette is clearer. Restoration work is underway — access rules may change. The castle stands in the northern oblast, away from lagoon routes; it works as a standalone goal or paired with a trip through Guryevsk and surroundings. Easiest by car. May to September is best; check access to the restoration site before visiting. The fort's silhouette reads well from the approach — one of those rare cases where an Order castle in the oblast still holds its shape, not just a hint of masonry.
