Yelnya Marsh Reserve

Yelnya marshes form a nature complex in Yelninsky and neighbouring districts — among Central Russia's largest raised bogs. Part of the protected areas system; some sectors are Рамсар wetlands of international importance. Landscape of sphagnum carpets, cranberries and rare orchids; capercaillie, hazel grouse and other taiga and bog birds nest here. Eco-trails at the bog edge; do not enter deep bog without guide and special footwear. Yelnya town has military history (1941 Yelnya Cauldron), but the marshes are a separate quiet motive. Contrast between urban memory and mossy silence makes an unusual route. Best in dry autumn and late summer: fewer mosquitoes, vivid moss and cranberry colours. Spring and after rain trails are washed out. Base in Yelnya town (~40 km from the bog); car recommended. One day — one trail and смотровая tower (if open). Repellent, waterproof boots and long clothing essential. Stay on trails — bog terrain is unforgiving.
