Yuriev Monastery
St George (Yuriev) Monastery was founded in the 11th century on Lake Ilmen's south shore, a few kilometres from today's Veliky Novgorod centre. Legend links it to Prince Yaroslav the Wise; rebuilt many times after fires and wars. Main buildings — cathedral and bell tower of the 18th–19th centuries in Novgorod tradition. Walls, gates and service wings remain; an active monastery with regular services. Known beyond architecture: scriptoria worked here, chronicles mention the site. Quiet cloister with Ilmen and field views; fewer visitors than the Kremlin, same respect for monastic life. Road from the city; Vitoslavlitsy open-air museum is nearby, but Yuriev deserves its own stop for ancient Novgorod mood without museum reconstruction.

Bus 7 or 7A from Veliky Novgorod centre; ~5 km by car on Yuriev highway.
