The longest natural cave of the Middle Volga — about a kilometre of passages in the gypsum of the Bogorodsky hills above the Volga, a protected natural monument since 1986.

Yuryevskaya Cave

The cave in the Bogorodsky hills south-east of the village of Tenishevo was first explored in 1953, when it measured twenty metres. In 1971 novices of the Kazan caving section cleared a blockage and opened 360 metres of passages; surveys of the 2000s and digs in 2010 extended the length to 990 metres, and by 2011 to 1,005. The cave is cut in gypsum of the upper Kazanian stage at its contact with dolomites: it is characterised by blind pits up to four metres deep, gypsum remnants resembling stalactites and 'counter ledges' — overhangs hanging above the floor at different heights. Nearby lies the Bogorodsky gypsum mine, whose adits broke into the cave system before the natural entrance was even found. Since 1986 the cave has been a protected natural monument of regional significance. The entrance is in the Volga bluff; inside it is cool, damp and dark, the passages narrow and in places crawl-only: it is a place for headlamps, helmets and an experienced partner, not for trainers on a whim.

How to get there

From Kamskoye Ustye south-east to the village of Tenishevo, then on foot along the bluff trail of the Bogorodsky hills to the entrance on the Volga bank.

Best season

May to October in dry weather; stay out after heavy rains and in the spring thaw.

Travel tips & stories

  • Only with a lamp, a helmet and a spare battery: a phone torch is not an option for crawl passages.

  • Never go alone and leave a note of your route — there is no signal in the cave or on the bluff.

  • You can inspect the entrance from outside without descending: the bluff itself and the Volga view are worth the road.
