Saalau Castle
In Kamenskoye (formerly Saalau), overgrown ruins remain of a Samland bishop's castle — a rare "salt" fort in the oblast, founded in 1352–1355 on the site of a burned Prussian stronghold. The name is linked to salt production: salt works operated in the area. In the summer of 1376 troops of Kęstutis captured and burned the castle; it was later rebuilt, and in the sixteenth century a brewery was added to the walls. After 1945 the fort was unused and slowly decayed — today it is regionally protected heritage. Access is open, but walls are crumbling and private property surrounds the site. Approach from Chernyakhovsk on local roads in Chernyakhovsk district; plan the route in advance.
