Zadonsk Monastery

Holy Tikhon Zadonsk Men's Monastery stands in Zadonsk on the Don's left bank. Linked to St Tikhon of Zadonsk, who lived and was buried here; founded in the 18th century, closed in Soviet times and later revived. The grounds include the Assumption Cathedral, Nativity church, St Tikhon's tomb and residential blocks. Pilgrims venerate the relics and walk the necropolis; for tourists it is also a classical and Russian monastic architecture ensemble. Zadonsk sits on a rise with Don floodplain views. The town is compact; the monastery is its main landmark. Allow half a day from monastery to embankment and old building stock. St Tikhon's feast in August is among the busiest periods. Roads to Zadonsk and monastery parking are heavily loaded then. Combine with Lipetsk Oblast (monastery near the regional border) or a route through Ostrogozhsk and Divnogorye to the south.
