Zhizdra River Town

Zhizdra stands on the Zhizdra River 100 km from Kaluga; known since the 17th century as a trading point and later district centre in the south. The river names both town and Oka tributary. Embankment and Zhizdra bridge are main stops; summer relaxation and winter ice views. Compact historic building — stone and wooden houses of the 19th–early 20th century. Not a tourist capital — no queues or souvenir rows. Local history museum covers peasant life, crafts and wartime events. Stop between Kaluga and Bryansk or base for Kozelsk and Ugra Park. Allow two hours for embankment, museum and centre. Modest food and lodging — book weekends ahead. About two hours from Kaluga by road. River may flood in spring — do not descend in bad weather. Fishing follows local rules.
