Zhupanovsky Volcano

Zhupanovsky is an active volcano at ~2923 m in eastern Kamchatka, part of the Avacha group. Eruptions in 2013–2016 sent ash columns kilometres high and disrupted aviation. It is clearly visible from Avacha Bay roads and east-coast drives, but summit hikes are rare — long, unsupported routes with ash-outburst risk when activity rises. Slopes hold primary tundra and lava fields of different ages; south-flank old flows contrast with the ocean — valued by volcanologists and photographers. Zhupanovsky suits observation from safe distances and prepared expeditions, not a quick city-side volcano. Check Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team data before travel.
