A powerful quartzite ridge with Bolshoy Shelom (1,427 m) — the third summit of the Southern Urals — and the young Zigalga National Park of 45,000 hectares.
Zigalga Ridge
Zigalga is one of the most powerful and extensive ridges of the Southern Urals, on the left bank of the Yuryuzan river in the Katav-Ivanovsky district. Its highest point is Bolshoy Shelom, 1,427 metres — the third summit of the Southern Urals; nearby are Poperechnaya (1,389), Evlakta (1,310), Trety Shelom (1,293) and Myorzly Utys (1,237). The geological Zigalga Formation is named after the ridge — its rocks are that distinctive. In November 2019 the Zigalga National Park was created here, covering about 45,000 hectares — one of the youngest in the country. The etymology is traced to the Persian 'zangar' — 'big rock'; the southern end with Bolshoy Shelom already lies in the South Ural Reserve in Bashkortostan. The ridge belongs to the Taganay-Yamantau belt of the Urals' highest massifs and is built of very hard quartz sandstone — the crests keep their steep forms for ages. The classic ascent of Bolshoy Shelom starts from the village of Tyulyuk; the trail is known for its 'staircase' through the forest belt and an exit onto stone fields.
How to get there
From Ufa or Chelyabinsk to the village of Tyulyuk; the Bolshoy Shelom trail starts at the village, 4–5 hours to the crest.
Best season
June to September; snow on the alpine zone is likely in autumn.
