Zoryinsky Bogs

The Zoryinsky sector of the Central Black Earth Reserve lies on the Seim–Psla divide in south-west Kursk Oblast. Elevations are 169–200 m; the key feature is the Zoryinsky bogs. Bog complexes preserve typical Middle Russian upland hydrology: raised and transition bogs, sedge communities, mosses and shrubs rare in steppe zones. For botanists it is one of the reserve's “living documents”. Protected since 1935; rules are stricter than city parks. Visits require approval from administration in Zapovedny or via the excursion service. Not a “pretty stroll with a café”: bring rubber boots, tolerate midges and walk boardwalks or trails with a guide. Zoryinsky bogs show the reserve's wet side — rubber boots instead of trainers. Guided tours are slow with stops at rare mosses and sedge margins; allow half a day.
