The Kostroma interior, forgotten churches and ancient towns by the water.

Description

Route description: Sudislavl — Makaryev — Unzha — Soltanovo — Galich: the Kostroma interior, forgotten churches and ancient towns by the water. This route crosses Kostroma Oblast — through old trading towns, monasteries, abandoned churches, tough dirt roads and quiet villages where history feels not like a museum but part of the landscape. Many places here require a deliberate approach: across streams, forest roads, fields and almost empty villages. But that is the point of the route — it shows not the parade-ground but the real north-eastern province. The trip begins in Sudislavl, a small town that greets you at once with a strong architectural dominant: the 18th-century Saviour-Transfiguration cathedral with its separate tent-roofed bell tower. The church works, is visible from afar and sets the route's calm, almost classical tone. The road then leads to harder-to-reach points — Spas-Penye and Ust-Nea. In Spas-Penye you have to wade through streams to reach the Transfiguration church, but surviving frescoes can still be seen inside. In Ust-Nea the mood changes completely: an abandoned church is being slowly taken back by the forest. After that the route reaches Makaryev, a town that grew around the Makaryev-Unzhensky monastery. There is more coherence and urban history here: the monastic ensemble, merchant houses, the regular planning of the centre and the feel of an old district town that once lived on trade, pilgrims and the road. One of the most beautiful natural-historical stops is Unzha. The ancient village stands on a high bank, with an 11th–12th-century hillfort nearby, the working Nativity of Christ church and the abandoned Resurrection cathedral. Wide views over the river and the northern distances open from the hills — here the route becomes especially spatial. Then comes the most remote part of the trip. Nikolo-Torzhek, Soltanovo, Nikolo-Shir and Arsenyeva Sloboda are points for those who like finding history outside tourist routes. Abandoned churches, iconostasis carcasses, Kostroma baroque, church complexes in the wilderness, bad roads and almost total emptiness. There is no ready infrastructure in these places, but there is a strong sense of discovery: as if you have reached where almost no one drives any more. The final point is Galich, an ancient town on the shore of the great Galich lake. After the quiet villages and abandoned churches it reads as the route's powerful historical knot: fortress ramparts, merchant buildings, old churches, the lake and dense urban fabric. The route suits those who love Kostroma Oblast not only for postcards and famous monasteries but for its far roads: villages on high banks, forgotten churches, forest, silence, traces of old trade and the sense of a real journey into the depths of the region.
