Ponochevny Battery area

The famous 221st Coastal Battery, which fought here during the Second World War, has not survived. Its three 130 mm naval guns opened fire on the second day of the war and helped block the port of Petsamo until 1942. The surviving structure nearby is Battery No. 10, built in 1953 on the opposite side of Ozerko Bay. It is often mistaken for the Ponochevny Battery, but it is a different site. Its large searchlights, gun turrets and underground rooms make the distinction worth knowing before a visit.
