Vayda-Guba

Vayda-Guba is the northernmost settlement on the European mainland of Russia. It stands on an ice-free bay, with the Arctic Ocean beyond. Norwegian settlers founded the village in 1864; the Russian-Finnish border passed here from 1921 to 1940, and a border post was established in 1939. Visitors should remember that an active border unit operates in the area. Near the village, on Cape Nemetsky, stands the Vaydagubsky Lighthouse — the northernmost lighthouse in Russia. From here the North Pole is about 2,500 kilometres away, almost entirely across the Arctic Ocean.
